By-Law Enforcement

The Province of Nova Scotia delegates certain law-making powers to Nova Scotia municipalities. Laws that municipalities are empowered to pass are called by-laws.

The Council for the Municipality of the District of Yarmouth adopts by-laws concerning various community issues in accordance with the Municipal Government Act of Nova Scotia.  By-laws require a first and second reading and must be advertised in the local media.

The Municipality of Yarmouth uses The Tri-County Vanguard for advertising proposed and approved by-law additions, changes, or deletions. Most by-laws come into effect when they are advertised as approved. During the proposal stage, members of the public may submit written comments either in support or opposition or appear in person on the day noted in the advertisement.

The By-law Enforcement Officer deals with issues relating to By-law Enforcement within the Municipality of Yarmouth. Inquiries on the by-laws of the Municipality may be made to the By-law Enforcement Officer at 902-742-9691.

By-laws are amended frequently. Please check the original documents on file with the Municipality of Yarmouth to see if there are any recent amendments that are not yet included in this consolidation.

Although every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of these electronic versions, the Municipality of Yarmouth assumes no responsibility for any discrepancies that may have resulted from reformatting.
